Default Advantage to Icy or Earth Damage?

Whats the advantage of the different types of damage? If my sword does 10-18 damage is it any better if its an "Icy" sword? I guess i just dont understand what having the "Icy" or "earth" damage etc. does for me. Thanks.

ok! icy is better against fiery monsters, and earth is better against, well, IDK what.

But really, not that much more damage.

Many different types of foes in the game take more damage from different types of damage.

You can search here for many people that have done detailed research on different mobs vs different damage types.

But basicly look at your armor on your warrior * bonus protection against physical* stands to reason that you may have a soft spot for something else?
Elementalist armor gives extra protection against different types of elemental damage so you can take it from there.

Apart from what is said above, there are different combos you can do with the icy or firey, etc mods.

A nice combo for icy is to have Spinal Shivers cast on a troublesome monk boss and whack em with your icy blade. No healing for you stupid Mursaat Monk bosses!

Ebon/Earth I have found is great against well earth creatures, wurms, scarabs, those annoying scoprions, basically anything that comes up out of the ground ebon/earth is great against. Rock creatures it's pretty good on also.

Icy is great in Hell and most things that don't have any elemental protection. Fiery is great in the snow regions against ice golems and ice imps. Vs Dwarves it's about the same as a regular weapon since they are wearing plate armor most of the time. And firey weapons just eat up the Charr cause of that fur they have for armor. And things with feathers, the Tengu. Fire is also good against the undead. Fire is really the top of the line in many cases, but, as I've noted there are special cases where other types of elemental damage weapons do better damage output because of the element and the creatures resistance to it.

In PVP it really doesn't matter a whole lot except against rangers and elementalists. From the looks of it most rangers get fire protection type armor mostly. Though my ranger wears lightning protection because of those darn lighting orb spike teams.

This is what I do when fighting pve and pvp.

Have at least one elemental dmg weapon and one physical dmg weapon.

First look at what your fighting and switch your weapon to what does the most dmg to it.

example

Warrior has armor vs phy dmg so use elemental dmg on them
Ranger has armor vs ele dmg so use physical dmg on them
Elementals has armor vs ele dmg so use physical dmg on them
Monks has armor vs ele dmg so use physical dmg on them
Necros has armor vs Piercing dmg so use elemental dmg on them
Mesmers has armor vs phy dmg so use elemental dmg on them
